Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001 - The UK Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001 (SENDA) establishes legal rights for dyslexic students in pre- and post-16 education. The Act introduces the right for disabled students not to be discriminated against in education, training and any services provided wholly or mainly for students, and for those enrolled on courses provided by 'responsible bodies', including further and higher education institutions and sixth form colleges.

The UK Code of Practice on Special Educational Needs
is published by the Department for Education and Employment (DFEE).

The revised Code of Practice, implemented in January 2002, provides a framework for developing strong partnerships between parents, schools, local education authorities (LEAs) and health and social services.

It promotes a consistent approach to meeting children's Special Educational Needs (SEN) and places the rights of children at the heart of the process, allowing them to be heard and to take part in the decision making process whenever possible.

The focus is on ensuring that SEN are identified as quickly as possible.

The SEN Code of Practice provides practical advice to LEAs, maintained schools, early education settings (nurseries) and others on carrying out their statutory duties to identify, assess and make provision for children's SEN.

All school and SEN providers have been given an SEN Toolkit, which is designed to provide practical day-to-day guidance on the same matters as the SEN Code of Practice and should be read in conjunction with it.
