Grade
Level Retention - The primary goal of student retention is to give students
a year to grow and to master the academic tasks of their current grade level before
advancing to the next level. However, a large body of research draws strong and
almost unanimous conclusions that retention does not help students on either personal
adjustment or academic success.

Alternatives
to social promotion and grade retention - President Clinton proposed adding
a provision to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act that would encourage
states and school districts to end social promotion.

Retention
in the Early Grades - a review of research. Because retention and promotion
practices are expressions of beliefs about purposes of education, retention is
a complex and emotionally laden issue. This guide is designed to help you examine
your district's or school's retention policies and practices and to determine
the impact of your retention practices.

Social
Promotion and Students with Disabilities - This policy study looks at existing
and emerging state policies on social promotion to determine the extent to which
students with disabilities are included or excluded. Results reflect the status
of state policies at one point in time, as determined from publicly available
state documents and statutes. The review is meant to contribute to thoughtful
policy development and stimulate consideration of issues associated with high
stakes testing to assess accountability for students with and without disabilities.

- National
Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities - The National Joint Committee on
Learning Disabilities (NJCLD) believes that it is imprudent to profess that ending
"social promotion" or expanding grade retention will address the problems faced
by children who find it difficult to learn.
