Mother
Seeks District's Help with
Dyslexic Daughter
EL
PASO, Texas. - One mother in the El Paso school
district tells ABC-7 that the district wanted to retain her daughter because of
a undiagnosed reading problem. Two weeks
ago, before summer school ended, Lisa Ballesteros found out her child, a second
grader-to-be at Bonham Elementary - was going to be held back. Ms.
Ballesteros says her daughter has had learning difficulties since Kindergarten,
but the problem was "ignored by teachers." El
Paso school district officials tell ABC-7 that they wait to test for dyslexia
until students are in the second grade because that's when learning disabilities
can be more clearly determined.
However,
even with an assessment test, Ms. Ballesteros feels her daughter's education is
still going to suffer without the proper resources to help her at her school.
School officials say Jasmine, who her mother
says has been physically ill after finding out she was going to go back to the
first grade, returned to school for the first time Wednesday as a second grader.
After several discussions with Ms. Ballesteros,
school officials have agreed to pass Jasmine to the second grade. School
officials say Jasmine will be tested for dyslexia Wednesday. After
the testing, Jasmine will then be placed on a nationally approved program for
dyslexic children, where she will attend a specific reading disorders class. Thank
you to the much commended abc7 news for the
