The children learn compensatory strategies to read and spell in a multi sensorial setting which are adapted to suit their learning style.
These twice weekly classes are given on top of the normal school curriculum.
In addition the DAS seeks to increase the awareness of dyslexia in Singapore so that the mainstream academic teachers will be able to monitor young children and put forth cases that are deemed to exhibit signs and symptoms of dyslexia either though delayed quality of work or conduct in class.
While some schools are more proactive in this awareness and partnership with DAS, some are still relatively closed to the idea and harbour some myths of dyslexia such as the notion of its alleged relation to intelligence and lifestyle determinants. (M.E., Singapore)
